St. Petersburg Avantgarde | The St. Petersburg Court Chapel has been presented with the Adams Alpha marimba designed by KesselsGranger

The Adams Alpha marimba was donated to the St. Petersburg State Capella (Moika Embankment, 20) by “Revival of Traditions”, a fund founded by cellist Sergei Roldugin. The marimba is a melodic percussion instrument, a relative of the xylophone. The premium five-octave Alpha series is a real “diamond in the crown” of Adams, the famous Dutch producer of professional percussion instruments. Today it is recognized as one of the best concert marimbas in the world.

“It is a great honour and privilege to have such a premium instrument for soloists in the arsenal of the Symphony Orchestra,” the Capella reported. “This will make it possible to perform works of contemporary repertoire, in particular the composers L. Janáček, K. Orff, P. Boulez, E. Vil-Lobos and contemporary Japanese and Latin American composers who often include the marimba in their compositions. This event is equal in scale and importance to the appearance of an organ or a new grand piano for a concert organization.”

The idea to give the Capella a first-class marimba was born thanks to the collaboration of the Capella with the St. Petersburg House of Music under the leadership of Sergei Roldugin. Roldugin for many years conducted “Music of the Stars” in collaboration with the Symphony Orchestra under the leadership of Alexander Chernushenko and the brilliant young soloists of Russia – laureates and winners of prestigious international competitions.

The design of the Adams Alpha 5.0 marimba was developed by the influential European agency KesselsGranger DesignWorks, known for its work for luxury car manufacturers – including suppliers to Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin.

The keyboard of the instrument is made of selected Honduran rosewood with special aging. This rare rosewood variety is an excellent sound conductor and gives the Alpha instruments a special acoustic gloss. The sound quality is also affected by the patented method of tuning, which was specially developed by the master craftsmen at Adams to achieve maximum accuracy and balance.
